Our last day of paddling had arrived. We packed up camp and launched from the campsite dock to paddle on Bonne Bay. We had a leisurely sun-soaked lunch on a warm stone beach. We napped. On the return paddle we saw a moose on shore. Newfoundland had offered us many surprises, much beauty, and just enough adventure. We loaded up and drove to Port-aux-Basque to catch the ferry to Nova Scotia.

We stopped along the Bay of Funday on our drive to Yarmouth. We didn't get to see the wonders of the tidal bore - our timing was off - but we did poke around amongst the rocks of the Fundy cliffs at Blomidon Provincial Park. We kept a wary eye on the tide levels!

We stayed the night at a motel with a restaurant. The motel did a drawing every night - the room number that was drawn got free lodging and breakfast. Mark won! What a great way to end our trip. It could not have been better in any way.

NOTE - June 27, 2009 - In the year since Mark and I took this trip we have received more than 70 emails from Newfoundlanders (former and current) . Somehow this report, meant originally for family and friends, traveled out to the wider world. The many writers all had a common pride in and love of their homeland that shone through in their notes. Mark and I would like to thank them here for their letters and kind words. We've enjoyed hearing from them all.  I can be reached at :  kate "-at-" cathyhartland "-dot-" com
